Haus Finds No. 009 — Caithness Millefiori Amber Glass Thimble

This was a Goodwill baggie find. It was one tiny object mixed in with a handful of other discarded little things. I almost missed it.
But once it was out of the bag, I could see it was something special. A miniature Caithness Glass thimble, handmade in Scotland, beautifully preserved and glowing amber orange. Across the top is an intricate millefiori design made from tiny pieces of patterned glass cane, arranged into a flower barely wider than a coin.
There’s a lot packed into this dainty thing. The millefiori alone is remarkable when you consider the scale — all those individual pieces of glass arranged by hand into a pattern you could cover with your fingertip.
And then there’s the fact that it’s a thimble. Sewing, mending, and making things by hand are all making a comeback. We are finding our way back to these slower practices.
This little piece comes from that world, even though it was made to be admired rather than put to work.
It's pristine. Handmade. And genuinely one of a kind in the way handmade things actually are.

THE FIND
Caithness Glass of Scotland is renowned for its millefiori paperweights — the centuries-old art of fusing patterned glass rods into intricate floral designs. This is a miniature paperweight thimble: the classic thimble silhouette rendered in warm amber glass and crowned with a hand-set millefiori cane top.
The amber body glows naturally and the top reveals green, white, and gold canes radiating from a single center in a tiny kaleidoscope of color. Entirely handmade; as the original box notes, each is "composed of patterned coloured glass rods fused together in a variety of designs." No two are ever quite the same.
Let it glow on a windowsill or a writing desk. Place it among books as a jewel-toned pause. Add it to a shelf of paperweights or Scottish glass. Or keep it close to you as a small, daily reminder for slowing down.

CONDITION
Pre-owned vintage condition — and remarkably well-kept in original case. Small characteristics from the original hand-fusing process are part of its character as handmade glass. The original Caithness case shows gentle age — light clouding and scuffing to the acrylic, as shown in the photos. The thimble itself shows no signs of its age.
